Three-Shaft gearbox and short lever movements

In both 132 kW versions of the Audi TT Coupé, that is to say with front-wheel drive or quattro, a five-speed gearbox is used. The 165 kW engine transmits its power through a six-speed gearbox as standard equipment.

For the first time, the 165 kW Audi TT Coupé quattro features a three-shaft gearbox. 5th, 6th and reverse gears are transmitted by way of an additional, third shaft in this unit.

An advantage of this new gearbox is that it occupies less space than a conventional two-shaft design, but is capable of transmitting high torques up to 350 Nm. As a weight-saving measure, magnesium is used for the casing.

Gears are selected by a wire-cable mechanism. This has the advantage that no rigid mechanical linkage is present between the gearbox and the gear lever, so that the transmission of vibration is largely avoided. Short lever travel, a direct gear-change action, well-defined selection points and a precise clutch capable of controlling even the maximum power needed when the car is driven in a sporting style the TT fulfils these demands to perfection. As a genuine sports car should, it makes every fast, precise gear change a sensual experience.
