The 132 kW (180 bhp) 1.8T

With a specific output of 100 horsepower per litre, this engine too is worthy of the pure-bred sports car to which it is fitted.

With five valves per cylinder as a special feature, it owes its vivid throttle response to a compact KKK Type K03 turbocharger. Such relatively small turbochargers have a lower mass moment of inertia and therefore respond more rapidly to accelerator pedal movements. Boost pressure builds up with less delay, so that the unpleasant "turbo lag" effect is avoided. Torque at the lower end of the engine speed range is also improved, this being due equally to optimum throttle butterfly and boost pressure settings. The turbocharger and the five valves per cylinder principle work ideally together, since the potential of the turbocharger can be utilised to the fullest extent by the large total cross-sectional area of the valves in each cylinder.

The high compression ratio of 9.5 : 1 ensures high efficiency and helps to keep fuel consumption low. Total fuel consumption (according to EU 93/116 standard) for the front-wheel-drive version is only 8.0 litres per 100 km, a low figure for a sports car in this performance category.

The 132 kW version has a peak torque of no less than 235 Nm, available over a broad engine-speed range from 1,950 to 5,000 rpm.

This TT version, whether to front-wheel-drive or quattro specification, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds and has a top speed of 228 km/h (front-wheel drive) or 226 km/h (quattro).

Its flexibility is also a good indicator of what the engine is likely to achieve in practice. It is a direct indicator for the engine's throttle response and pulling power. For example, the more flexible an engine, the faster and more safely overtaking manoeuvres can be carried out. In addition to this, a car with a flexible engine is always more fun to drive - which is surely one of the fundamental motives for buying a sports car in the first place! In 4th gear, the Audi TT Coupé with 132 kW engine accelerates from 60 to 120 km/h in 9.8 seconds, the kind of dynamic sports-car experience that is certain to appeal to the enthusiastic driver.
